San Pedro de Macorís Carnival 2020
The carnival of San Pedro de Macorís has the participation of The Guloyas, a group of dancers and musicians, which take root in the culture of workers of African origin from the English Caribbean Islands, which were brought to the Dominican sugar plantations at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. You can dance to the rhythm of flute, drum and triangle to “Good morning, good morning, good morning Guavaberry”. They perform the dance of the Cocolo, with its multicolored outfit, ax (sugarcane cut) and hat with peacock feathers. The Cocolo Dancing Theater of San Pedro de Macorís was declared by UNESCO in 2005 “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. You can also dance with Los Alí Babá, troupes with oriental motivations and influence of the Cocolos.
