Cachote est un magnifique site protégé de forêt de brouillard, avec un petit village situé à 1 097 mètres d’altitude. Il y a des sentiers sinueux depuis lesquels vous pourrez observer la flore tropicale, ainsi que des chemins de randonnée pour une excellente observation des oiseaux.

Suivez le sentier du café à Café Toral, une visite très complète, durant une heure, de cette célèbre plantation de café située dans les montagnes de Polo. Découvrez les différentes étapes de la production du café, de la plante à la tasse.

Cafeto Madre est une autre option du sentier du café. Des guides locaux vous accompagneront le long des nombreux chemins conduisant à la plantation de café. Vous pouvez également en profiter pour combiner cette visite avec une excursion à la forêt de brouillard de Cachote non loin de là.

Cette coopérative, gérée localement à Polo produit son propre café sur place ; visitez sa petite fabrique de novembre à janvier.

Nichée dans des forêts luxuriantes au pied de la chaîne montagneuse de Bahoruco, une randonnée de trente minutes à travers une forêt tropicale foisonnante conduit à cette immense grotte et ses piscines émeraude.

Le Lago Enriquillo est le lac le plus grand et profond au-dessous du niveau de la mer des Caraïbes, idéal pour observer la vie sauvage et explorer la nature. Des excursions en bateau sur le lac et à Isla Cabritos révèlent une importante population de crocodiles américains et de flamants.

Plus grand lagon d’eau douce de la République dominicaine, atteignant 28 kilomètres carrés, la Laguna Rincón abrite une variété de vie sauvage suffisamment riche pour en faire une réserve scientifique protégée, dans laquelle vivent tortues, iguanes, flamants roses, pélicans, hérons et canards de Floride.

Montez de solides marches en bois et explorez les nombreux pétroglyphes sur les parois, des visages suggérant la présence de Taïnos il y a des milliers d’années.

Piscine d’eau douce populaire, courant jusqu’à la mer, le Río Los Patos est connu comme le fleuve le plus court de la République dominicaine. Vous verrez des canards marchant tant bien que mal le long de ses berges pendant que vous pataugez, nagez et profitez de l’eau fraîche.

Pays des merveilles pour les amoureux de la nature, intégré dans la réserve de biosphère Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo, classée par l’UNESCO, la Sierra de Bahoruco abrite une variété impressionnante de forêts, de même qu’un sous-sol calcaire. La majorité des espèces de flore et de faune vit ici.
