La maggioranza della popolazione della Repubblica Dominicana è cattolica o di altre confessioni cristiane. Di conseguenza, le chiese dominicane hanno rivestito un ruolo importante nella cultura e nella storia del paese, fin dai tempi della colonizzazione spagnola. La chiesa più significativa della Ciudad Colonial è la Catedral Primada de América, la più antica delle Americhe, in cui si svolgono le celebrazioni nazionali ufficiali. La Ciudad Colonial vanta molti altri siti religiosi, tutti raggiungibili a piedi, come la chiesa di Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes, una delle due rappresentazioni della santa patrona del Paese. Ogni anno, il 21 gennaio, i dominicani compiono un pellegrinaggio alla Basílica Catedral di Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia, il più importante santuario del Paese dedicato alla santa patrona della Repubblica Dominicana (la Vergine Maria), tappa anche di molti tour in partenza da Punta Cana. Al di fuori dei sentieri battuti, vale la pena visitare anche il Colle Santo di Santo Cerro e la chiesa adiacente, eretta sul terzo luogo più sacro del Paese, dove i dominicani vanno in pellegrinaggio il 24 settembre, giorno dedicato alla Señora de Las Mercedes.

Il Museo de la Altagracia raccoglie un’incredibile collezione di dipinti e gioielli in oro databili tra il XVII e il XX secolo. Presenta, inoltre, la la cultura e la storia religiosa della Repubblica Dominicana e il culto della Vergine di Altagracia.
Higüey, Punta Cana
Situata fuori dall’area del porto nel villaggio di Bayahíbe, questa insolita chiesa è il più antico edificio religioso della zona: consacrato nel 1925, è interamente realizzato in legno importato dalla Florida. Di qui si gode di un’ottima vista sul mare.
La Romana
Considerata la prima chiesa cattolica del Nuovo Mondo, l’edificio coloniale di mattoni e pietra del Templo de Las Américas è situato in bellissimo giardino paesaggistico. Passeggia in questo luogo fortemente spirituale, accarezzato della costante brezza che soffia dal vicino Atlantico.

Within the deep southwest Dominican Republic lies the Jaragua National Park.
