Gli appassionati di musei troveranno una miriade di opportunità in tutta la Repubblica Dominicana. Ciudad Colonial, a Santo Domingo, primo insediamento urbano del Nuovo Mondo, ospita eccellenti musei dedicati alla storia della colonizzazione spagnola, dal palazzo di Alcázar de Colón al Museo de las Casas Reales, dove si trovava la corte reale. A Plaza de la Cultura si trova un complesso museale dedicato alla storia e all’arte moderna, mentre l’ultimo nato è il museo interamente dedicato al cioccolato dominicano. A Puerto Plata si incontrano musei dedicati agli eroi nazionali e alle pietre preziose, a Samaná un piccolo museo dedicato ai mammiferi endemici (le megattere), a Sosúa un affascinante Museo Ebraico. Il museo Altos de Chavón di La Romana ospita l’esposizione più completa dedicata alla popolazione Taino presso il Museo Regionale di Archeologia.

Che si tratti di storia, geografia, pietre preziose, cioccolato, baseball, rum, vita quotidiana o l’architettura della Repubblica Dominicana, c’è sempre un museo adatto ad ogni età e interesse.

Dal cinquecentesco Palazzo di Colombo fino all’arte moderna e agli eroi dell’indipendenza, i musei della Repubblica Dominicana ripercorrono l’affascinante storia del Paese.

 
 
Costruito a forma di croce, il Faro di Colombo si erge sull’estremità orientale di Santo Domingo. Il faro è oggi un museo e un mausoleo, al cui interno sono custoditi i resti di Cristoforo Colombo.
Santo Domingo
Costruita agli inizi del XIX secolo, questa fortezza di colore giallo presenta un bellissimo cancello esterno ornato da due cannoni rivolti verso la città. Punto difensivo strategico durante la Guerra di Restaurazione, la fortezza venne usata dal corpo dei Marines statunitensi come base durante la prima occupazione americana della Repubblica Dominicana (1916-1924).
Santiago
Gestita da uno dei maggiori esportatori di cacao del Paese, la struttura, in parte museo e in parte fabbrica di cioccolato, offre un viaggio a tutto tondo nella fiorente industria del cacao della Repubblica Dominicana.

Nelle vicinanze degli hotel di Boca Chica, questa mostra espone i cimeli del World Baseball Classic vinti dalla Repubblica Dominicana nel 2013, e una collezione di mazze e palle collegate a match storici, donate dai giocatori della MLB dominicana.
Boca Chica, Santo Domingo
Questa iconica torre in marmo bianco, circondata su tutti i lati da un giardino multilivello, offre splendide viste panoramiche sulla città. È possibile visitare l’interno del monumento, dedicato agli eroi della Guerra di Restaurazione morti nella lotta per la riconquista dell’indipendenza della Repubblica Dominicana dalla Spagna.

Una delle più ampie raccolte di oggetti appartenenti alla cultura precolombiana e taino nella Repubblica Dominicana, con oltre 3.000 pezzi databili tra il 4000 a.C. e il 1492.
La Romana
Il museo privato Bellapart ospita un’importante collezione di oltre 2.000 opere d’arte (dipinti, sculture, arti plastiche) realizzate dagli artisti dominicani del XIX e del XX secolo.
Santo Domingo
Il primo museo delle cere della Repubblica Dominicana è dedicato a uno degli eroi dell’indipendenza più amati, Juan Pablo Duarte. Statue di cera a grandezza naturale raccontano la vita del politico dominicano. Al secondo piano, invece, si trovava l’abitazione della famiglia Duarte.

Il Museo de la Altagracia raccoglie un’incredibile collezione di dipinti e gioielli in oro databili tra il XVII e il XX secolo. Presenta, inoltre, la la cultura e la storia religiosa della Repubblica Dominicana e il culto della Vergine di Altagracia.
Higüey, Punta Cana
Il Museo de las Atarazanas Reales (MAR), spazio che ospita l’esposizione di archeologia subacquea più importante della Repubblica Dominicana e di tutto il continente americano, ha aperto le porte ai visitatori alla fine del 2019 con l’obiettivo di far conoscere una preziosa collezione di reperti storici e culturali recuperati dai fondali dominicani.
