A plethora of stores line Santiago’s primary shopping street, Calle del Sol. Expect everything from apparel to shoes, electronics, and souvenirs. You’ll also find the city’s historic Mercado Modelo here, a beautiful, modern indoor market filled with small shops selling locally made Dominican items, from paintings to jewelry, art, and merengue instruments. As the second largest city, Santiago offers an array of shopping malls–you’ll find plenty of designer boutiques, as well as gift shops.
Santiago is the cigar capital of the world, with the largest production of smokes at the many factories. In February every year, the ProCigar Festival is held with organized visits to cigar factories and tobacco field tours to companies operations such as General Cigar, Davidoff, Matasa, La Aurora, Corporación Cigar Export, Tabacalera La Alianza, La Flor Dominicana and the Fuente Foundation. Cigars can be sampled and purchased. Premium cigar smoking is guaranteed
