Located an hour east of the capital city of Santo Domingo, and closer still to Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), the cosmopolitan beach town of Juan Dolio offers an easy and tranquil tropical escape near the capital city. A favorite of well-heeled urbanites who flock here on weekends, Juan Dolio’s 10-kilometer (six-mile) long, spacious and sparkling white sand beach is dotted with hotels, dive shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as a variety of vacation homes, upscale residential communities, and newly built condominiums.
Beyond days spent on Juan Dolio’s stunning beach, a host of nearby attractions awaits. The adjacent Guayacanes fishing village, with its canoe-punctuated white sand beach, offers a perfect day trip filled with local culture, while Playa Caribe’s azure waves attract surfers. Golfers will find their bliss at Juan Dolio’s Guavaberry and Los Marlins courses, teeing along verdant views, while hikers can head to the “cave of wonders,” revealing a wealth of Taino rock art.
Juan Dolio is also an ideal base for day trips to Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, or La Romana. These activity and shopping-packed cities are located within an hour’s reach heading east or west.

A small tugboat, the Alto Velo sunk off the waters of Playa Caribe on the southeastern coast. Resting at eight meters (26 feet), an ideal depth for beginners, it quickly turned into an artificial reef surrounded with abundant marine life.
Visit the historical center of one of the top rum brands in the country. Know the history of rum making in DR, its role in the culture, Barceló’s manufacturing process, tour the rum barrel storage areas, get to taste the various Barceló varieties of rum.
This cave houses hundreds of well-preserved Taino pictographs and petroglyphs dating back thousands of years, and impressive samples of stalactites and stalagmites.
From mid-October to the end of January it’s baseball time in the Dominican Republic. The Estrellas Orientales is the San Pedro de Macorís baseball team. This means several times a week during the season there will be games with the best of Dominican Winter Professional Baseball League playing 15 minutes away from Juan Dolio.
Guavaberry Golf & Country Club
Designed by Gary Player, the 18-hole course borders a nature reserve. Although it quickly earned a reputation as a tough course, it is playable for golfers of all skill levels thanks to five sets of tees.
Coral Costa Caribe’s Dream Casino adds to Juan Dolio’s informal nightlife scene, and offers all the favorites, from blackjack to poker, and slot machines.
Eating at the many good restaurants in Guayacanes on Calle Central and Juan Dolio on the Boulevard or Calle Principal, with or without a view, brings hundreds to this beach area, especially on weekends. Many of the restaurants double-up as bars and lounges. In Guayacanes, Deli Swiss, La Playa by Nopal, Salitre, Playa El Pescador, Sca Club, St. Tropez Caribe, El Manguilito and Cococane Beach are the most popular. In Juan Dolio, the favorites are: El Sueño, El Mesón Español, Bistro Marianna, Sal Marina, El Lobo y la Sal, El Concón, Café del Sol, Paladar and La Brissa.
Juan Dolio’s main street offers a good variety of beachfront bars and lounges for late night drinks, with plenty of dancing; casino fun awaits at the Coral Costa Caribe Resort.
On the main roads, there are small souvenir shops. For coffee, rum and cigars, head out to the Jumbo superstore in San Pedro de Macorís that is open until late in the evening. It is centrally located on Av. Luis Amiama.
Designed by Charles Ankrom, the 18-hole course features numerous artistic bunkers, and lakes and mounds that perfectly complement the surrounding beauty of the Caribbean Sea.
