As you head from Moca to Jamao al Norte, the Flamboyant trees make their magical appearance along the sides of the road, further enhancing the view of the rolling hills that are so perfect they seem handcrafted. On the way to the kayak excursion, a fun and bumpy ride will take you to experience great adventures amidst green hills intertwined with the stunning fresh waters of the Yásica River. As you venture into the mountains, you begin to see the landscape change and become a bit cooler with each turn. 

Upon arriving at the Yásica River, friendly guides will provide you with all the safety instructions. You will get into the kayak and take a practice run before heading out onto the river to enjoy the view of tall trees and different types of birds flying around you. The guides are very kind and stay with you the entire time, keeping you safe and ensuring you have a great time. 

The color of the water is turquoise and varies depending on its depth. Most of the time it is calm, but it has some gentle rapids, making it more fun. Each turn of the winding river reveals increasingly stunning views. 

Several stops along the way will allow you to rest on the sandbanks. Take some time to have fun with the group or challenge each other to a little kayak race to see who reaches the next stop first and earns the right to brag. It's very easy to swim in the river, and the water temperature is just right to cool off from the heat. 

The gentle five-kilometer kayak ride is perfect for families and ends at the confluence of the Yásica and Jamao rivers, surrounded by lush vegetation.

After the kayak tour, you will visit a typical house high in the mountains. The family will open the door to their home and their hearts, making you feel welcome. You will delight in a delicious traditional Dominican lunch prepared by loving hands. They have the ability to make something so simple inexplicably exquisite.  

After lunch, you will regain energy by having a strong Dominican coffee prepared in the countryside style. You will be able to share beautiful moments with the group and enjoy the view of the diverse landscapes from the top of the mountain.

Jamao al Norte

The municipality of Jamao al Norte is located in the northwest of the Espaillat province, on the northern slope of the Northern Mountain Range. It is an area of subtropical humid forest with valleys, mountains, forests, viewpoints, mist, birds, flowers, and the best swimming spots in the province. The Yasica and Jamao rivers originate in the Northern Mountain Range, converge at Boca de Jamao, and flow into the Atlantic Ocean. 

Among the birds that inhabit or pass through are herons, palm crows, woodpeckers, nightingales, petigrises, and hummingbirds. It has a land area of 144 km² and a population of over 8,000 inhabitants who are passionate about caring for the environment and genuine hospitality.

Sustainable Community Tourism

The Jamao Ecotours community tourism project is an initiative driven by the Ecotourism Cluster of Espaillat (PROESPAILLAT), with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project offers accommodation options in eco-friendly cabins and family homes, and features guided routes with expert guides (trained young individuals who enhance their access to education) to the reserves El Cañón de Arroyo Frío, Cola de Pato, and Hongo Mágico; a kayaking or tubing tour, and horseback riding excursions along the trails Las Caobas and Tinajones.

More than a decade of effort by volunteers, professionals, and various local entities has resulted in the recovery of a deforested watershed, transforming it into an unparalleled green paradise.
